Hiking in the Karwendel & Rofan mountains
Lake Achensee is surrounded by two mountain ranges: The Rofan and the Karwendel mountains are best explored on foot. Those who want to go up the mountains without enduring the climb can enjoy a scenic gondola ride and savour the views all the way up.
The Rofan mountains to the east of Lake Achensee are rugged and gentle at the same time. On the high plateau, gentle paths climb over lush meadows to the peaks whose rock faces fall away precipitously on the other side. The Karwendel mountains, which lie to the west, are home to the region's most splendid flora and fauna and boast the highest population of golden eagles in the Alps.
