Classic race for hikers & trail runners!

Karwendelmarsch

The legend lives! Tirol’s event calendar is filled with exciting sporting events, and one of the highlights is the legendary Karwendelmarsch on 31 August 2024. This race offers long-distance hikers and runners an exhilarating challenge amidst the breathtaking, unspoilt scenery of the Nature Park Karwendel.

The Karwendelmarsch has a long history. Originally organized as a fundraiser for young Tirolean skiers, it evolved into Tirol's largest sporting event between 1969 and 1990. In 2009, the Achensee Tourist Board and the Region Seefeld – Tirols Hochplateau relaunched the event with the aim of providing participants with a unique sporting experience while promoting resource conservation and raising awareness of the nature reserve. Continuing its commitment to sustainability, the iconic hiking and mountain running event began in 2023 to donate a portion of the entry fee - three euros - to the "Nature Conservation & Alpine Pasture Maintenance" project along the route, directly benefiting the Nature Park Karwendel. This innovative approach underscores the Karwendelmarsch as a leading example of how sport, tourism, and protected areas can work together to reduce human impact on the natural environment.

The route

The Karwendelmarsch starts in Scharnitz, from where participants complete either 52 or 35 kilometres. The route travels via Schafstallboden, Karwendelhaus, Kleiner Ahornboden, Falkenhütte, leading to the Eng (the finish of the 35 km route), and then continues via the Binsalm, Gramai-Hochleger, Gramaialm, and Falzturn Alm to Pertisau am Achensee. Throughout its course, the trail offers spectacular mountain ranges with unique formations and views, as well as expansive plateaus. Alpine pastures and barns dot the landscape, adding to its beauty. Ten refreshment stations along the way offer drinks and regional snacks. For detailed route information, visit our interactive map at maps.achensee.com or the website karwendelmarsch.info.

Initiatives for a more sustainable event

The organizers are continuously working to improve the environmental impact of the event and are happy to consider ideas from participants. Many have suggested to eliminate plastic cups, and refreshment stations have switched to biodegradable alternatives, which can be fully recycled after the race.
