Gear up for the Nordic skiing season!

The right cross-country skiing equipment

You want to learn how to glide, stride or skate in the stunning alpine environment? In this article, we share our tips for choosing the right cross-country skiing equipment. Visit the local sports shops or cross-country ski schools for more expert advice on choosing the right gear and apparel for cross-country skiing.

Classic or skating style? To choose the right skis, first think about which type of skiing you’re looking to do. Different cross-country skiing styles require different skis. For climbing, the bottoms of classic cross-country skis either use a rough horizontal grip zone in the middle (fish scales) or skins. Another option is to apply grip wax. Skating skis have only one glide zone. The trail preparation is also aimed at the different styles: While classic cross-country skiers use set tracks, skaters glide over smooth, combed trail surfaces.

It’s important that you choose boots that match the type of skiing you’re doing. Skate ski boots are more rigid, with a higher cuff than classic boots, giving good ankle support, whereas classic boots have a softer outsole and lower cuffs for a greater range of movement. Some outfitters offer versatile boots that can be used for both skate and classic skiing. Bindings are also specific to each style.

To complete your ski equipment, you need a quality pair of poles. Keep in mind the type of skiing you plan to do. For classic skiing, the poles should come up to chest height, whereas skating ski poles should be around the same height as your chin.

Cross-Country Skiing Opening

The Cross-Country Skiing Opening in December is the perfect way to kick off your winter sports season. You'll have the chance to try taster sessions for beginners and advanced skiers in both skating and classical techniques, as well as equipment tests and much more.

The camps provide the perfect opportunity for both beginners and returners to learn or improve their skills, get tips on technique, and try out equipment. The experience is further enhanced by social activities. New this season is an advanced skating technique session led by a certified cross-country ski instructor.
