Cross-country skiing at Lake Achensee

Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular winter sports at Lake Achensee. Although the sport originated in Scandinavia, Lake Achensee is the birthplace of professional cross-country skiing instruction. In the late 1970s, Gustav Leithner established the first official training standards for cross-country ski instructors. Today, his son Christoph runs the Ski School Pertisau. Several cross-country ski schools in the Achensee region offer courses for all skill levels, whether you are trying Nordic skiing for the first time or want to refine your existing techniques.

The Achensee region boasts over 228 kilometres of scenic trails groomed for both classic and skate skiing. Skiers can glide along the flat trails by the snow-covered shores of Lake Achensee or explore the stunning mountain scenery of the Karwendel valleys, where the trails are more challenging. In between, you can warm up and refuel with hot drinks and delicious meals at one of the cosy mountain huts. For the best experience, the region offers a superbly marked and maintained network of trails.
