Via ferrata safety tips

You don’t need professional climbing experience to tackle a via ferrata, but you should possess advanced hiking skills and a head for heights. For a safe and enjoyable climb, ensure you have proper equipment, master the correct techniques, be considerate of others, and always respect the environment.

Standardized signage for via ferratas in the Achensee region includes a topo map to assist with orientation and route visualization. Difficulty ratings for routes in the Rofan and Karwendel mountains range from A (easy) to E (very difficult). Before setting out, always verify the specific requirements for your route and honestly assess your climbing ability and experience. Furthermore, pay close attention to the stated ascent and descent times when planning your trip.

  • You should always put some thought into tour planning. Get the necessary route knowledge not just from topos, but also read guidebooks and maps. Ask your accommodation provider for local tips and insider knowledge.
  • Examine the point weather forecast for the actual location of your climb and scan the hourly forecast. If thunderstorms are forecast, postpone your via ferrata adventure to another day! Lightning strikes can be fatal, and the steel cables make ideal lightning conductors.
  • Get information on the via ferrata’s difficulty level and honestly assess your skills and climbing experience!
  • Shoes with a good grip and a firm sole (approach shoes are most recommended), via ferrata harness, via ferrata set, helmet, leather gloves and rucksack: Use only full equipment sets that meet the appropriate standards! The steel cable diameters of the Achensee via ferrata are suitable for "Skylotec Rider 3" sets. Watch this video and learn how to find the proper equipment.
  • Always keep enough distance to other climbers and communicate to each other, especially when overtaking someone or when meeting oncoming climbers. Watch out for rockfalls!
  • Be responsible and leave no trace: A perfect climbing day also means being considerate of other via ferrata climbers and respecting the natural world. Click here to find out how.

  • If you are climbing with a partner, always double check each other to make sure your equipment is on properly. Find out how from this video: How to check your partner's equipment
  • The proper via ferrata technique not only gives you more safety and confidence, it also increases efficiency. Shifting your weight and using your arms and legs correctly are essential techniques to conserve energy. Video: How to grip and climbing technique
  • How to clip, unclip and reclip carabiners? How do you keep your rope from twisting? Watch the instructions in this video: How to clip, unclip and reclip

In case of an emergency

  • Emergency numbers: 144 (ambulance), 140 (emergency number for alpine accidents in Austria), 112 (European emergency number)
  • Emergency app „SOS EU Alp“: This app shares your GPS coordinates with local emergency response teams, reducing the time between alert and rescue considerably. The app is a valuable addition to the official alpine emergency number 140.
A common beginner's mistake is holding the steel cable too tightly and trying to pull oneself up using only arm strength. This leads to rapid muscle fatigue and hand cramping. To climb efficiently, focus on moving your body upward by pushing with your legs.
