From its initial construction to its daily operations, sustainability has always been at the forefront of this leisure centre. With initiatives such as on-site power generation and soft outdoor lighting, the Atoll Achensee is setting a benchmark for environmental responsibility in the region.
Panorama-BAD and SEE-BAD, Penthouse-SPA, Lakeside-GYM, BOULDER-Halle and the Lagoon Restaurant: Atoll Achensee brings all of these together under one roof. Thanks to state-of-the-art facilities, it has become a flagship project not only for modern leisure centres, but also for sustainability within an otherwise energy-intensive sector. Among other accolades, the Atoll Achensee has been honoured with the EWA Professional Award 2022 and the Tirol Change Award 2022. Driven by an innovative energy concept based on heat pumps, deep wells and photovoltaics, the Atoll Achensee achieves carbon-neutral energy generation for heating, cooling and ventilating the entire building. The water used is returned to Lake Achensee without any loss. Furthermore, during winter, waste heat from the ice rink is repurposed for heating purposes. Equipped with a rooftop photovoltaic system comprising 480 high-performance solar panels that harness pure solar power, the Atoll Achensee also generates its own electricity, setting a strong regional example for environmental responsibility.
However, sustainability at the Atoll Achensee extends well beyond energy generation. Advanced lighting and water control systems have been installed to ensure environmentally friendly operations, and heat recovery has been integrated into the kitchens and cold stores. The interior design prioritises natural materials, and local products are used for infusions, baths and massages. The Atoll Achensee also engages suppliers and visitors as active partners in environmental protection. The chemicals used for water treatment and cleaning the facility are delivered in reusable containers and applied strictly to the minimum extent required by health regulations. In the catering area, beverages are largely served from reusable containers. Visitors benefit from a bus stop located directly outside the Atoll Achensee and an electric vehicle charging station. In addition, 150 bicycle parking spaces accommodate those arriving by bike, whether they are cycling along the shores of the turquoise-blue Lake Achensee or through the green fields of the surrounding villages.
Outdoors, sustainability goes even further: as part of a pilot project with the Provincial Environmental Ombudsman's Office, green spaces feature multi-year flowering plants that eliminate the need for annual replanting. The outdoor lighting concept adheres to the criteria of the "Helle Not" (the plight with light) initiative to minimize light pollution. Furthermore, rather than being scrapped, the historic Achensee ship, the St. Benedikt, was preserved and now serves as an outdoor play boat at Atoll Achensee.
