Die Alpenüberquerung (stage 3: Achenkirch - Maurach am Achensee/Fügen)

Stage 3 of the Alpine crossing follows one of Tyrol’s most beautiful routes along the west side of Lake Achensee. From Achenkirch, the path leads with gentle ups and downs along a well-developed trail, partly with steps and handrails, to the Gaisalm – the only alpine hut in Tyrol that can only be reached on foot or by boat.

The route passes varied scenery with small waterfalls, mixed forests and alluvial fans reaching down to the lake, often called the “Tyrolean fjord”. There are several places along the way suitable for swimming. The lakeside path continues to Pertisau and then on beside the Achensee steam cog railway to the next stage destination, Maurach. In the afternoon, the journey continues by bus and the Zillertalbahn to Fügen.
