Die Alpenüberquerung (stage 3: Achenkirch - Maurach am Achensee/Fügen)
This stage combines scenic lakeside trails, impressive mountain scenery and cultural highlights, followed by a comfortable journey to the Zillertal. From Achenkirch, the route follows the varied trail along the shore of Lake Achensee. The well-maintained mountain trail has gentle ups and downs and leads through mixed forests, past small waterfalls, rocky sections of the shore and areas where streams have carried stones and gravel down to the turquoise waters of the lake.
A special highlight of this stage is Gaisalm, the only alpine pasture in Tirol that can only be reached on foot or by boat. Along the way, several bathing spots offer the chance to take a refreshing swim in Lake Achensee. The popular lakeside trail then leads to Pertisau before continuing to Maurach, passing the historic Achenseebahn steam cog railway – the oldest of its kind in Europe.
After the hike, the journey continues by public bus and the Zillertalbahn to Fügen, the starting point for the next stage of the Alpine crossing towards the Zillertal and Tux Alps.
