461+496 Rund um den Unnutz + Schmalzklausenrunde

This varied full-day MTB tour combines MTB routes 461 “Rund um den Unnutz” and 496 “Schmalzklausenrunde”. The route covers around 34 kilometres and 925 metres of elevation gain, leading from Achenkirch to Steinberg am Rofan and back. It follows forest roads with beautiful views and passes through alpine landscapes and varied terrain around the Unnutz.
From Achenkirch, the route first climbs along a forest road, passing the “Kaiser-Maximilian-Rast” viewing platform and the Köglalm mountain hut on the way to the Kögljoch. At 1,487 metres, the Kögljoch is the highest point of the tour. From here, the route descends past the Schönjochalm and through the Schönjochtal valley to Steinberg am Rofan.
In Steinberg, the route follows the Steinberger Ache mountain stream to the Schmalzklausenalm (not serviced). It then continues through the Satteltal and Schönjochtal valleys. Highlights along this section include an impressive passage through the rocks and the Kraftplatz, a peaceful spot with a viewing platform.
The return route to Achenkirch leads past the Obere Bergalm (not serviced) and along the Alter Steinbergweg. Varied landscapes, longer climbs and descents, and beautiful views make this a challenging and rewarding full-day MTB tour.
