Achenseebahn – from Jenbach to the Tyrolean Sea
Since 1889, the Achenseebahn steam cog railway has been puffing its way up the mountain from Jenbach in the Inntal Valley to Lake Achensee. Europe’s oldest steam-powered rack railway climbs an impressive 440 metres over a distance of just under seven kilometres.
Just a few minutes after setting off from Jenbach station, the railway faces its greatest challenge: a 16 per cent gradient. Hissing and puffing, it carries you up to Lake Achensee, passing lush meadows and shady woods along the way. You can also look forward to magnificent views of the Inntal Valley and the surrounding mountains, with a gentle breeze blowing around your face. Once it reaches Lake Achensee, the old locomotive deserves a rest. Passengers, on the other hand, can continue their journey immediately and board a ship with the Achenseeschifffahrt.
