Hiking in the Karwendel & Rofan mountains
Lake Achensee is surrounded by two mountain ranges: The Rofan and the Karwendel mountains are best explored on foot. Those who want to go up the mountains without enduring the climb can enjoy a scenic gondola ride and savour the views all the way up.
The Rofan mountains to the east of Lake Achensee are rugged and gentle at the same time. On the high plateau, gentle paths climb over lush meadows to the peaks whose rock faces fall away precipitously on the other side. The Karwendel mountains, which lie to the west, are home to the region's most splendid flora and fauna and boast the highest population of golden eagles in the Alps. Comprising over 727km² the Nature Park Karwendel is the largest nature reserve in Austria. Follow this link to read our safety tips!

The sports shops in the Achensee region will be happy to provide expert advice. While the question of the perfect hiking boot is frequently asked, a general answer is difficult to give, as the choice of footwear is as varied as the hikes themselves.
The following provides a brief overview of which boots are suitable for specific terrains. Please note that this is only a rough guide and does not substitute for professional, individual advice.
- Lightweight hiking boots: For easy hikes on flat, well-maintained paths.
- High-ankle hiking boots: Suitable for well-maintained, firm trails that may include steeper sections.
- Heavy, sturdy hiking boots: For multi-day tours in alpine terrain on steep, rocky, and challenging paths.
- High-altitude mountain boots: For multi-day tours in high alpine terrain. These are winter-ready, crampon-compatible, and suitable for difficult, secured climbs.
