Those who want to leave their skis at home and are looking for a gentle winter experience, will find numerous alternatives to explore the snow-covered mountain landscape off the ski pistes. 

Winter hiking

With every step the fresh snow crunches under your feet and thousands of ice crystals glisten in the cold winter air. There is hardly a better way to experience the magic of winter at Lake Achensee than winter hiking. The enchanting landscape around the lake boasts more than 150 kilometres of scenic winter hiking paths which invite you to discover the natural beauty of Tirol ‘step by step’ and in complete tranquility.

Guided winter hikes

Ranger-guided winter hikes are a wonderful way to explore the habitat of plants and animals, read tracks, learn about snow and watch wildlife. From 17 December 2018 to 15 March 2019 the region offers ranger-guided hikes into the beautiful Nature Park Karwendel.

  • MONDAY: Wildlife watching

    Starting points for the Monday hikes change every week. Please see below for dates and meeting points.
    Guided hike Achenkirch
    The tour starts at the Landgasthof Hotel Fischerwirt and leads to Hinterwinkl past the river bed of the Oberaubach to the Stod waterfall.
    Meeting point: 10.30 a.m. at the pay parking lot in front of the Landgasthof Hotel Fischerwirt, bus stop Achenkirch Fischerwirt
    Dates: 17 December 2018, 7 + 28 January 2019, 18 February 2019, 11 March 2019
    Duration: approx. 2.5 hours
    Guided hike Maurach
    The loop tour starts at the roundabout in Maurach and leads over meadow paths to the housing estate Lärchenwiese, then via a forest trail to the Indian forest/adventure playground in the direction Weißenbachtal.
    Meeting point: 10.30 a.m. at the pay parking lot adjacent to the Café Klingler, bus stop Maurach Mittelschule

    Guided hike Pertisau
    The tour starts at the parking lot adjacent to the Langlaufstüberl and leads into the Gerntal valley to a small chapel near the Pletzachalm mountain hut.

  • TUESDAY: Winter experience Tristenau

    The tour starts at the Langlaufstüberl into the Tristenau valley. The tour leads over the golf course to the river bed of the Tribachl and from there back to the starting point. A fun winter experience where you can also spot small forest animals (birds, squirrels, etc).

    Dates: every Tuesday from 18 December 2018 to 12 March 2019
    Duration: approx. 3 hours

  • WEDNESDAY: Winter landscapes

    The tour leads from the parking lot of the Langlaufstüberl into the Falzthurn valley towards Gramai. The trail rises gently through a beautiful forest until it reaches the Falzthurnalm mountain hut, from there it leads over open terrain to the river bed. We enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains and get transported to times long past. How were the mountains formed? Why are there valleys and cirques? These and many other questions will be answered during this impressive hike.
    Meeting point: 10.00 a.m. at the pay parking lot adjacent to the “Langlaufstüberl” (bus stop: Pertisau – Karwendeltäler)

  • THURSDAY: Tiroler Steinöl Winter Tour

    This tour follows the trail of the Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil) miners. From the car park, the tour leads over the bridge of the Unterau stream towards Unterautal and follows the Tiroler Steinöl® adventure trail through a beautiful mountain forest. We walk past the Hochstegenalm in the direction of the Gröbneralm until we reach open meadows. While we take in the gorgeous view of the gentle valleys and the surrounding mountains, the guides share interesting facts about the Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil).
    Meeting point: 09.00 a.m. in front of the Restaurant Seealm in Achenkirch directly at the Christlum lifts. A pay parking lot is available. (Bus stop Achenkirch Christlumlifte)
    Dates: every Thursday from 20 December 2018 to 14 March 2019

  • FRIDAY: Wildlife in winter

    This sporty tour starts at the parking lot Falkenmoos and climbs to a wonderful viewpoint with vistas of Hinterunutz and Vorderunutz. The trail continues in the direction of the Falkenmoosalm where the rangers explain how wildlife adapts to survive winter. The return route leads past a deer feeding station back to the starting point.
    Meeting point: 10.00 a.m. at the pay parking lot Falkenmoos in Achenkirch. Bus stop Abzw. Steinberg, followed by a 15-minute walk.
    Dates: every Friday from 21 December 2018 to 15 March 2019
    Duration: 4-5 hours

  • REGISTRATION & FEES

    Price per tour is EUR 15 per person incl. snowshoeing equipment (snowshoes and poles). Payment can be made directly upon registration at the local information offices or with the ranger. All hikes from Monday to Friday require pre-booking on the previous day. Please register at the local information offices during opening hours until 5.00 p.m. // by phone at +43 (59) 5300-0 until 6.00 p.m. // by e-mail at wanderprogramm@achensee.com until 8.00 p.m. Maximum number of participants: 10 people

Snowshoeing

Snowshoe excursions provide the opportunity to discover completely pristine winter landscapes off the cleared winter hiking trails. The region’s certified guides will show you how to use snowshoes in a safe environment while sharing information about our landscape and wildlife. Tip: The original trapper tour which leads from Pertisau into the Karwendel valleys.
