Small ski areas full of variety!

Downhill skiing at Lake Achensee

Lake Achensee is the perfect destination for skiers who prefer to enjoy winter at a more leisurely pace. The region’s ski areas are wonderfully compact yet versatile, with plenty of wide slopes that are ideal for families, beginners, and those returning to the sport after a break. Carving enthusiasts and snowboarders will also find plenty of varied terrain to explore. Between the Christlum lifts in Achenkirch, the Rofan cable car in Maurach, the Karwendel cable car and Planberg and Wiesen lifts in Pertisau, and the lifts in Steinberg and Wiesing, there are 53 kilometres of slopes served by 28 lifts. How does skiing beneath spectacular snow-capped peaks with gorgeous lake views sound? Simply click into your skis, grab your poles, and hit the slopes!

The Christlum lifts in Achenkirch, which access 27 kilometres of slopes, are only an hour’s drive from Innsbruck and Munich, making them a great choice for skiing day trips. At altitudes between 950 and 1,800 metres, the Christlum is one of Austria’s most snowsure ski areas. Children, families, or advanced skiers: the ski area offers something for every skill level. Wide carving and steep mogul slopes make the Christlum a versatile ski area for recreational skiing. Ski ticket and season pass holders can take advantage of free parking.

In just five minutes, the Rofan cable car takes you from Maurach to an altitude of 1,840 metres. From the top, you can swoop down eleven kilometres of slopes. The ski area features a children’s area for tiny tots. If you are craving an adrenaline rush, put the AIRROFAN Skyglider on your must-experience list. Whizzing through the mountain air on a zipline which resembles the wings of an eagle is an amazing experience. If that’s too adventurous for your taste, you can watch the excitement from the surrounding mountain huts.

The Karwendel cable car

Located in the middle of Pertisau, the Karwendel cable car transports visitors to a small ski area with splendid panoramic views of Lake Achensee. Another perk of the ski area Zwölferkopf which offers 12 kilometres of groomed slopes: The pistes are not crowded and queues at the lifts are rare.

The Planberg and Wiesenlifte

Beginners and children can practice their first turns using the Planberg and Wiesenlifte in the valley in Pertisau.

Looking for a quiet, idyllic ski area? Then we recommend the Rofan lift in the village of Steinberg, which is tucked away in a side valley of the Achental. The small-scale ski area offers easy slopes which is most suitable for beginners and very young skiers.

The ski lift Astenberg In Wiesing has one slope (blue: 1km) which is most suitable for children and beginners. The rope tow lift takes you to the top of the slope at an altitude of 760 metres above sea level.

Does the Achensee region have ski areas suitable for families and beginners?

The ski areas around Lake Achensee are a fantastic choice for families, beginners, and anyone rediscovering their passion for skiing. They strike the perfect balance: varied enough to keep things interesting, but small enough to stay manageable and safe for children. Many of the wide slopes offer breathtaking views of Lake Achensee. Since the ski areas are just a short distance apart, it’s easy to try a new area every day. With dedicated practice slopes and beginners' zones, it’s the ideal place to master your first turns at your own pace.

Where can I hire skis in the Achensee region?

You can hire ski equipment in the villages of Achenkirch, Pertisau, and Maurach. A full list of all ski hire shops is available on our website.

Is there a ski bus service?

Yes, getting to the slopes is easy. In winter, the regular regional bus (which is free of charge with your AchenseeCard) doubles as a ski bus, taking you directly to the lift stations around the lake.
