The best hikes in late summer

Eine Wanderung im Rofangebirge zu zweit oder mit der Familie eröffnet atemberaubende Ausblicke auf die Region Achensee. Im Hintergrund ist der Speichersee zu sehen.

One of the best ways to discover a landscape is on foot. And, according to a study by the Austrian Alpine Association, hiking can boost your mood, replenish your energy, and restore a sense of calm. Hiking is a great outdoor activity at any time of the year. But for many, autumn is the best season for exploring the forests and mountains. The leaves change colour, the temperatures are cooler, and the views are incredibly clear. Nature shines in hues of amber, red and gold – a real feast for the eyes.

Of course, a stop for refreshments is a must on a hiking or mountain tour. Numerous alpine huts in the Rofan and Karwendel mountains invite you to relax and enjoy regional delicacies while you soak in the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Fancy a scenic gondola ride? Let the Karwendel and Rofan cable cars whisk you to the top of the mountains. The cable cars operate until the beginning of November (depending on the weather conditions).

Tour to the Dalfaz Alm
One of the most scenic autumn loop tours starts near the valley station of the Rofan cable car. The tour leads past the Naturhotel Alpenblick in Maurach to a small wooden bridge, turns left and links to a forest road. A beautiful path which runs mostly through the forest leads to the Durraalm (not serviced). Alongside the Durrawand, a rugged trail continues to the Dalfaz Alm at an elevation of 1,693m, where you can stop for refreshments and enjoy the gorgeous view. The tour leads back to the valley via the Dalfaz waterfall, which cascades down 60 metres, making it the highest in the Rofan mountains and also a great vantage point.

Seekar & Seebergspitze
The loop tour to the Seebergspitze (2,085m) via the Seekar (2,053m) is one of the best hikes at Lake Achensee, giving you permanent vistas of the lake. The view of the opposite Rofan mountain range is equally spectacular. The Seekaralm, located on the northern side of the Seekarspitze, lets you enjoy splendid views of the Christlum ski area and the neighbouring peaks of the Hochplatte (1,813m) and Juifen (1,988m). At seven hours long, the tour is recommended for experienced hikers only and requires sure-footedness and a head for heights.
