Excursions in the surroundings
Day trips to the top attractions of the surrounding area
Lake Achensee is the perfect base to explore other attractions in Tirol, such as the silver town of Schwaz, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds and the Große Ahornboden with its impressive old maple tree population in the Nature Park Karwendel. There is something for everyone to enjoy, and most attractions can be reached by public transport which is included in your AchenseeCard.
The public bus takes visitors from Lake Achensee to the train station in Jenbach. From there, the sightseeing bus travels to the silver town of Schwaz and also to the nearby sights. Special highlights are the Tratzberg Castle and the silver mine Schwaz. The scenic ride is an attraction in itself as the bus meanders through Tirol’s largest valley on its way to the individual stops. In addition, visitors can participate in a free guided city tour (Language: German) in Schwaz every Thursday at 13.30 (meeting point: bus terminal at the shopping center Stadtgalerien, Wopfnerstraße). If there is still some time left, the Planetarium Schwaz is also worth a visit.
Between Jenbach and Schwaz the Tratzberg Castle towers majestically above the Inntal valley, inviting visitors to explore what lies behind its historic walls. The rooms which are open to the public – among them the hunting hall, the armoury and the queen’s parlour – feature original furniture typical of the Gothic and Renaissance period. Audio guides tell the secrets and the history of the castle from the view of its previous owners. Children will be provided with an exciting fairy-tale audio tour. As an option, the experience can be rounded off with a spectacular 360° virtual reality journey through the castle’s 500 years of history. Set on an area of 6,800 m², Tratzberg Castle with its 5,000 m² shingle roof is one of Tirol’s most important cultural monuments, dating back to the 13th century.
Silver Mine Schwaz
The “mother of all mines” promises an exciting journey into the history of Europe. The mine railway takes visitors 800 metres underground to discover the harsh realities of silver and copper mining and the life of miners 500 years ago. In addition, the tour gives a deeper insight into the social and financial development of Europe. If you have some time left, explore the Museum der Völker (Museum of Peoples) which is located in the immediate vicinity.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds
The “Realm of the Giant” in Wattens is just a 30-minute drive from Maurach. Arrive, enter, be amazed! Impressive art installations centering around the famous Swarovski glass crystals will delight young and old alike. Changing exhibitions go hand in hand with the established Chambers of Wonder in the “Interior of the Giant”. In the outdoor area you can dream under the crystal cloud while the children are letting off some steam in the play tower. The Swarovski Crystal Worlds are a memorable experience for the whole family!
The Große Ahornboden (Naturpark Karwendel) with its giant trees lies beneath a backdrop of the fantastic mountain scenery. 2,300 maple trees are spread over 240 hectares. In autumn, when the leaves glow golden in the sunshine and the first snow falls on the peaks of the surrounding mountains, the trees present a true natural spectacle in their blaze of colour. The amazing landscape is a worthwhile excursion year-round.
