“Summer drives the city dwellers out of the dusty streets, they look for a taste of the refreshing countryside.” (From the magazine Europa, 1852)

Gliding across the lake in a rowing boat or enjoying a picnic on the lakeshore beneath a backdrop of the surrounding mountainscape – summer holidays have a long tradition at Lake Achensee. The lake, which lies nestled between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, has always been the chief draw for visitors to the region. What makes this place so popular? Is it the picturesque backdrop or the variety of activities provided by the combination of “mountain and lake”? Probably both. The Nature Park Karwendel and the almost entirely accessible lakeshore of the “Tirolean Sea” are the unique features that attract today’s Achensee enthusiasts.

Running, mountaineering, sailing, diving, surfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddle boarding, tennis, climbing or golfing? Tirol’s Sports and Vitality Park offers a huge range of recreational activities. The region boasts a network of over 500 kilometres of well-maintained hiking trails, a guided hiking programme and above all the possibility to combine hiking with boat trips on the Achensee ships. By the way: Beautifully situated at Lake Achensee, the Gaisalm is the only mountain hut in Austria that has its own jetty, allowing visitors to start many scenic hikes directly from the lake. If you want to enjoy a break on extensive, sun-drenched lakeshores surrounded by spectacular mountain ranges, Lake Achensee is the right place for you.

The opening times of accommodations and restaurants, mountain huts as well as businesses, experience providers and attractions at Lake Achensee will be updated on a regular basis. The friendly team of the Achensee Tourist Office will happily assist you daily from 8.00 to 18.00 by phone at +43 5 95300-0 or by email at
