Ortovox Safety Academy

The Ortovox Safety Academy offers professional off-piste training designed for snowshoe hikers and ski tourers. The course provides participants with the knowledge and essential skills in backcountry safety and features guided tours.

On the weekends of 5th and 6th January (snowshoe hikers) and 9th and 10th March (ski tourers), participants will learn the basics for more safety in deep snow. Adequate preparation, the right equipment and behaviour and the ability to assess potential dangers are essential skills for a safe backcountry experience.

The Achensee holiday region is a paradise for snowshoeing and ski touring, offering diverse terrain filled with untouched powder off the marked routes in the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. For tour suggestions, maps and GPS data visit maps.achensee.com.

At the Ortovox Safety Academy on 5th and 6th January and 9th and 10th March 2019, the experienced mountain guides from Bergsport Achensee will share essential knowledge for the right preparation of a snowshoeing or backcountry ski tour. Courses include hands-on training on the new ski tour training track in the Rofan mountains.

  • Participation requirements

    What to bring:

    • Equipment: snowshoes (already adjusted to your winter hiking boots) or touring skis (with fitted and perfectly sticking skins), telescopic poles with basket, winter hiking boots or ski touring boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, weather appropriate clothing, functional underwear (merino), insulation jacket, change of clothes, hat and gloves. 30-litre rucksack, provisions for two full touring days, thermos flask for hot beverages.
    • Avalache safety gear: aluminium shovel, aluminium or carbon probe, avalanche transceiver (free hire available on site)
    • Snowshoeing skills: safe hiking skills on red hiking trails in summer
    • Skiing skills: safe skiing on red slopes and experience in deep snow skiing required, as every participant has to descend in open terrain!
    • Fitness level for ascent: 200 metres elevation gain per hour

    • Knowledge on equipment, snow conditions, avalanche safety
    • Information and tips for tour planning
    • Interpreting and assessing avalanche forecast bulletins
    • Appropriate behaviour in case of an avalanche
    • Hands-on training in rescuing avalanche victims
    • Basic skills of modern risk management
    • Completion of the Ortovox ski tour training track
    • Guided group tour on day 2
  • Programme

    Saturday, 5th January 2019

    • Meeting point at 8.30 a.m. at the cash desk of the Rofan cable car in Maurach am Achensee.
    • Check-in and luggage drop at the Erfurter Hütte adjacent to the top station of the Rofan cable car
    • Group tour of the Ortovox ski tour training track Rofan
      Participants will learn how to assess the risk of avalanche and how to keep safe during the tour, and will receive hands-on training in handling avalanche safety gear (probe, shovel, transceiver).
      Afterwards the participants head back to the Erfurter Hütte and get educated on equipment knowledge, snow conditions and avalanche awareness, how to assess an avalanche forecast bulletin, basics of modern risk management and assessment methods.
    • Group dinner and overnight stay at the Erfurter Hütte

     

    Sunday, 6th January 2019

    • Group breakfast and planning of the snowshoeing or ski tour in the Rofan mountains, max. 500 metres elevation gain
    • Reading and assessing the current avalanche forecast bulletin
    • Ski touring: Putting theory into practice with special emphasis on the behaviour in open terrain
    • Afterwards the participants head back to the Erfurter Hütte to enjoy a convivial get-together looking back on the experiences and impressions of the day.
    • Snowshoe hikers will take the cable car to the valley, ski tourers will ski downhill on the piste.
  • Participation & Fee

    Participation fee for the 2-day Ortovox Safety Academy snowshoe or ski tour training is EUR 239 per person. (Minimum number of participants is 4, maximum is 12 people).

    The price includes

    • 1 overnight stay with half board at the Erfurter Hütte
    • State-of-the-art rental equipment: transceiver, shovel and probe fulfilling the latest ORTOVOX safety standards
    • 2 days guiding by state-certified mountain and ski guides of Bergsport Achensee
    • 2 days classes and organization
    • 1 round-trip ride with the Rofan cable car

     

    Not included in the price: beverages at the Erfurter Hütte, snacks/hot drinks during the tours, rental fee of snowshoes, skis, poles, etc. Equipment is available to hire at various local sports shops.
