Alpine cattle drive festival in Achensee

When summer is drawing to a close, it is slowly getting cooler and the leaves are starting to fall from the trees. High-time for the farmers on the Alpine pastures to return to the valley with their animals.

The Alpine cattle drive, as it is known, is a permanent late summer event which is very much celebrated by farmers and also in the towns.

Elaborate adornment by way of a thank-you

The Alpine cattle drive is a permanent fixture in Tirolean customs and enjoys a long tradition. The animals are adorned with magnificent head-gear, consisting of ribbons, flowers and little wooden ‘Spruchtafel’ plates for their subsequent rounding up; they are then taken down into the valley. This is the farmers way of giving thanks for an incident-free summer up on the Alpine pastures.
In the village the return of these wonderfully adorned cows along with the farmer’s families and their helpers is joyously anticipated. Delicious food, music and great entertainment … this Alpine cattle drive tradition is celebrated much like a party.

There are well over 50 managed Alpine pastures in the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. During the months of September and October the cows are taken from the Alpine pasture back to their barns.
