Winter season start
Silently, winter will enter the "natural stage Achensee" and envelop it in a blanket of snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland which sparkles like thousands of crystals. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. It’s curtain up for winter between the mountains and the lake. The cast: Frost, ice, snow-muffled silence. And lots of unique experiences.
Gliding silently through the snow and enjoying the spectacular scenery: Lake Achensee boasts over 200 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails groomed for classic and skating skiing. With flat sections alongside the lakeshore and challenging trails in the Karwendel valleys, the region offers versatile terrain. If you are looking for expert guidance, book a course or private lessons at the region’s cross-country ski schools or join the Achensee cross-country ski camps.
Skiing at Lake Achensee
The ski areas in the Achensee region are small-scale, charming, and full of variety: The ski area Christlum in Achenkirch, the ski areas in Maurach and Pertisau and the lifts in the idyllic village of Steinberg am Rofan and in Wiesing boast 53 kilometres of slopes. Slopes come in all shapes, from easy to difficult to wide and child-friendly. While the region’s ski schools offer ski courses for all ages and skill levels, they are specialized in teaching children. Qualified ski instructors teach the proper technique in a safe and fun environment, showing aspiring little skiers how to make their first turns in the snow.
Sledding down the mountain
Trudging up the mountain wrapped up in warm clothes, stopping by a mountain hut and enjoying Tirolean delicacies, followed by an exhilarating toboggan ride to the valley is a popular winter pursuit at Lake Achensee. The region boasts numerous natural toboggan runs. If you’re a night owl, you can also go tobogganing at night. Nearly all toboggan runs in the Achensee region are floodlit when the moonlight is not bright enough, and some are even open until midnight.
Winter hiking & snowshoeing
How about enjoying a walk in the snow-muffled silence, with the only sound the crunching of the snow under your feet? Lake Achensee boasts over 150 kilometres of cleared winter hiking trails along the lake, in the valleys and on the mountains. The region offers a series of guided winter walks and snowshoeing tours, where our knowledgeable rangers share interesting information about the local fauna and flora.
Skinning uphill to the summit!
Ski touring is an activity that will get you hooked. Enjoying the solitude of winter, finding your own track in unspoilt nature, and descending in deep snow is an exhilarating combination. Safety is always the top priority when venturing out into the open terrain. The Achensee region has installed five checkpoints where ski tourers can test their avalanche transceivers. In addition, skiers can build their backcountry knowledge and avalanche awareness by visiting the Ortovox avalanche educational trail in the Rofan mountains or joining the Achensee ski tour camps.
What could be better than relaxing indoors after a day’s adventures in the snow? Wellness is one of the region’s main attractions. At the leisure centre Atoll Achensee, you can relax in the pools of the Panorama-BAD and in the saunas of the Penthouse-SPA. The star ingredient in most of the treatments is Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil), which is mined in the region and processed in skincare products.
