Hiking on wings of eagles
Tirol’s Eagle Walk trail proceeds through the entire state covering some 320 kilometres. In 24 day stages, hikers get to cross through and learn about Tirol. A total of three of the loveliest tours proceed around Achensee.
Take a Walk along the Eagle’s Wings! Enjoy an eagle’s perspective of Tirol’s most beautiful Alpine scenery. As the eagle flies, the Eagle Walk runs through Tirol – the whole length of the country, from east to west. The Eagle Walk is steep in some places, gentle in others, and rugged in most. Novice and expert alike will enjoy the varied terrain of the trail as it passes through the heart of the Alps; however, many stages should only be attempted by those who are sure footed and comfortable on unstable ground. The 320-kilometer trail runs from the Kaiser Mountain Range to Arlberg, comprised of 24 stages with a total elevation gain of 23,000 meters and a total elevation loss of 20,000 meters.
In East Tirol, avid hikers can take up the challenge of a shorter Eagle Walk, overshadowed by the lofty peaks of Großglockner and Großvenediger: With its 93-kilometer footpath, nine stages, and an elevation gain and loss of some 8,000 meters each, it offers endless hiking opportunities and stunning views!
Three stages run through the Achensee region:
- Stage 6 – From Pinegg to Steinberg am Rofan, the Most Beautiful Middle of Nowhere
This route proceeds from Pinegg in Brandenberg valley to Steinberg am Rofan. In complete seclusion, there are inclines of around 1100 metres to cover on this moderate trail, along with around 780 metres of descent.
- Stage 7 – From Jausenstation Waldhäusl in Steinberg am Rofan to the Erfurter Hütte
This tour proceeds from Steinberg am Rofan to the Erfurter mountain hut and down into the valley to Maurach/Achensee. In this 18 kilometer long stage there are a total of 1590 metres altitude to climb. You are rewarded with superb views to the Rofan mountains, which to one side have steep, rugged faces, while gentle Alpine pastures feature on the other.
Eagle walk highlights: AirRofan sky glider and the Adlerhorst 360° viewing platform
- Stage 8 – From the Erfurter Hütte to the Lamsenjochhütte
Take the cable car for a convenient downhill ride from the Erfurter mountain hut to Maurach, dropping 800 metres in elevation or start from Maurach. Walk along the shores of Achensee Lake to Pertisau and into Falzthurntal Valley, with the track gradually climbing until you reach Gramaialm Alpine Pasture Hut. 1,030 meters of altitude and 17 kilometers are on the agenda at this stage.
