Indian Summer at Lake Achensee

Indian Summer at Lake Achensee

The leaves glisten in rich gold and red colours, the air is crystal clear, and the mountains seem close enough to touch: Both connoisseurs and nature lovers gush over the beauty of the “Indian Summer” in the Achensee holiday region. The peaks of the Rofan and Karwendel mountains surrounding Tirol’s largest lake entice with spectacular views. Rustic mountain huts invite visitors to stop by and enjoy a Kaiserschmarrn (a sweet, fluffy shredded pancake) or some hearty snacks, while the hosts happily join their guests for a friendly chat.

There is no need to endure the climb to reach higher places. The Karwendel cable car in Pertisau operates until the beginning of November and transports holidaymakers effortlessly up the Zwölferkopf mountain. Visitors can watch paragliders soaring on thermals, then stop for refreshments at the quaint Bärenbadalm mountain hut which is a 30-minute walk from the top station. The tour continues via the scenic tunnel trail which has been partly cut into the rock and descends back to the starting point.

One of the most beautiful tours starts at the top station of the Rofan cable car the tour leads to the Dalfazalm mountain hut which entices guests with a delicious Kaiserschmarrn. Next stop is the Dalfaz waterfall: Just take a seat on one of the wellness loungers, enjoy the panoramic view and forget the time. And perhaps make plans to visit the Gramaialm mountain hut the next day: Starting in Pertisau, visitors can cover the seven kilometres by bike or by foot. The Sonnjoch, with an elevation of 2457 metres the highest peak in the area, is situated at the end of the valley, a world away from the distractions of everyday life.
